The Staithes pattern (above) has two bands down the
sleeve as, to add a third, would take the patterning below
the level of the elbow (which is usually left plain). The
decision, however, is always left up to the individual
knitter.

There is also a tradition of Gansey knitting in The Netherlands and
many of the Dutch designs are particularly intricate, such as the
“Pernis” pattern shown above. To give an indication of the skill of
